Community Invited to Meet Sports Celebrities and Help Put a Child in the Game

METRO NORTH REGION, COLO --- A Precious Child, in collaboration with several youth sports leagues, has announced the launch of a community driven program that will help provide kids with new and gently-used sports equipment.  giveSPORTS, a division of A Precious Child, will officially kick off its effort on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at Noah’s Event Center located at 11885 North Bradburn Boulevard in Westminster. Special program will begin right at 4:30 PM. The community is invited to join in the giveSPORTS launch festivities which will include special appearances by sports celebrities such as Darius Holland, former Denver Bronco Defensive Tackle and local youth, college and professional players representing basketball, baseball, football, and soccer.

Attendees will have the opportunity to take photos with players and receive autographs while enjoying great tailgating food and music.  There will also be a chance to win door prizes.  The event is free and open to the public.  Attendees are encouraged to bring new and gently-used sports equipment that will be distributed by giveSPORTS to kids throughout the region who otherwise would not have the proper equipment to participate in a sport.  Donations are also being accepted on an ongoing basis at A Precious Child located at 557 Burbank Street, Unit E in Broomfield.  The group is in specific need of basketball, baseball, football, soccer, hockey, lacrosse, tennis, golf, and softball gear.

“The truth of the matter is that there are kids here in our community who do not have access to the proper sporting equipment necessary to play sports,” said Michael King, Chair of the giveSPORTS Committee and Executive Director of Broomfield Soccer Club.  “Our intent is to help even the playing field, by providing kids in need with a chance to get in the game.  We all know that kids who are active and engaged in extra-curricular activities such as sports do better in school.”

Stan Garnett, Boulder District Attorney added, “The giveSPORTS program will help provide a path to healthy living, good citizenship and deter children from entering the criminal justice system.”

Marcelo Balboa, an Ambassador for giveSPORTS said, “I'm involved with giveSPORTS because I think all kids deserve an opportunity to play organized sports no matter their family circumstances.  I've seen the difference sports can make in the lives of disadvantaged kids and I know this program can have a significant impact here in Colorado."

The giveSPORTS Launch Event is held in partnership with Noah’s Event Center, a new special event facility that just opened its doors in Westminster.  Noah’s will also be celebrating its Grand Opening on July 12th with a Metro North Chamber Ribbon Cutting that will kick off the evening’s giveSPORTS launch festivities.  Mike Bohn, University of Colorado’s Athletic Director, will be the keynote speaker. Special attendees will include Stan Garnett, Boulder District Attorney; Don Quick, Adams County District Attorney; Nancy McNally, Mayor of Westminster; and Pat Quinn, Mayor of Broomfield.  Colorado youth athletic leagues that will be in attendance include Broomfield Soccer Club, Thunder Baseball League, Blitz Football, JAM Basketball and Legacy High School.

INTERNATIONAL THRILLER DANCE EVENT COMES TO COLORADO, RAISES MONEY FOR CHILDREN

Simultaneous dance event expected to achieve record-breaking participation around the world as dancers celebrate Michael Jackson

BROOMFIELD, CO – October 5, 2009 – The internationally popular Thrill the World phenomenon, a worldwide synchronized dance of Michael Jackson's Thriller, will this year be joined by Colorado dancers. People around the globe will celebrate dance and Michael Jackson’s legacy for the third annual year by learning the choreography from the famed music video, and simultaneously performing the dance routine in an attempt to break the world record of most people consecutively performing the dance, set during last year’s Thrill the World event.

The Thrill the World events raise money for a variety of charities around the world.  The Colorado event, to be held from 4-7 PM, October 24 at the Paul Derda Recreation Center in Broomfield, will benefit A Precious Child, a local non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children. Local dance instructor Carol Casper will lead the event.

“Michael Jackson’s Thriller video is an iconic symbol of dance, popular throughout the world. I am proud to bring the event to Colorado to give dance lovers of all levels and ages the chance to learn the dance and participate in this fun international movement,” said Casper. “In line with the Thrill the World commitment to charitable giving, I am happy to donate proceeds from the Colorado event to A Precious Child, an organization doing great things for needy children in our communities.”

In 2008, Thrill the World set the world record for largest simultaneous Thriller dance, with 4,179 people at 72 events in 71 cities in 10 nations participating. Many Thrill the World participants dress up to mimic the zombies featured in the music video. Michael Jackson himself viewed the 2008 Los Angeles event from a helicopter. Thrill the World organizers are aiming for the goal of 270,000 participants for this year’s event.

At the Colorado event, participants will have several hours to learn the dance before the simultaneous international performance, which will be taped to share online.

“We’re thrilled that this fun evening will be even more meaningful in its benefit of A Precious Child,” said Carina Martin, executive director of A Precious Child. “The money raised will be put to good use helping disadvantaged children here in Colorado.”

The Colorado Thrill the World event will take place from 4-7 PM, Saturday, October 24 at the Paul Derda Recreation Center located at 13201 Lowell Blvd. in Broomfield. No dance experience is necessary and costumes are welcome but not required. Cost for admission is $10 per person or $25 for a family of four and $5 for each additional child.
